Magicians.com 1,000th Member!

Magicians.com's 1,000th member is shown above next to member #999, Chastain Criswell, who appears unimpressed he missed the 1,000 by 1!!! :-) Side note: check out Chastain's upcoming magic convention in North Carolina. Magicians.com welcomed its 1,000th member today, June 30th, all the way from Sydney, Australia!

The 1,000th member's name is Peng or otherwise known as "Mr. 1,000", and when I sent Peng an instant message congratulating him, he said: "Hi Ryan, yes I got your message. I am pleased to release my new teaser "Entity" here first on magicians.com You can not even see this demo on my web page yet. It is up on youtube right now so close personal friends can view it, but outside of my close friends, the magicians at magicians.com are the first to see it!!!!(check out my videos) I respect all of you, and many of you have talked with me about your love of magic, and I thank you for that. I have also gotten to know Ryan Ogaard, the man behind the scenes, the person that has given us a place to showcase our ideas and discuss magic. Lets start giving back. With that being said, post your videos, engage in respectful conversation with eachother in regards to out art. Start posting in the forums, give back and get involved. I would also like to thank Mr Graeme Reed for taking the time away from his other video productions, to give me a teaser video that represents exactly what your spectators will see. Excellent work Graeme, your production company will do well in this market, you truly have an eye for capturing the overall feel of an effect, something that others miss the mark on. Buy a Trick, Now make it yours.
I got Dan Harlin's CardToon a few years ago, because I loved this trick. When I first got it I did the presentation as the instructions said to do. Most trick instructions tell the secret, but also suggest a routine to use the trick's gimmick. I slowly discovered that the "suggested routine" should be tailored to the performer's style or character. This is the heart of magic that seperates the magicians from the people who only buy a trick to perform it. The only way to take a trick and make it your own is to make sure you 1) Enjoy performing this trick to others, 2) The trick fits your character or style of magic and 3) Create your own routine or presentation that works for you, making it more personal to you. Some magic buyers will get a trick, perform it a few times and then stuff it into a drawer with other tricks they have purchased. Magic is practice and presentation and sometimes you can create a presentation after a lot of practice and working out a routine. I perform CardToon by asking a person to think of any card in this deck of cards. They do and then I pretend to think of the card, but stop and ask, "What is it?" This usually gets a response like." I'm suppose to tell you?"(what kind of trick is this?). I response with, "Well, I'm not that good..." This statement always gets a laugh and I proceed with the trick by fanning thru the deck to find their card. Of course this gets a laugh too, since they can see all the cards are in order and I am searching for the card that they named. Not magic, but funny and we continue the trick. Now when the their card is revealed at the end, I always say, "Not bad for a 2 dimensional drawing,(laugh) hey he's not Pixar, but he's pretty cool don't you think?" This is all presentation, taking the spectator thru a story or a nice boat ride thru the trick and not just hitting them with a punchline. It took a while to come up with my routine from lots of performances and seeing how people act to my presentation. I would add or take things out to see which things worked and what things didn't. This is what you have to do to make a trick you own, it a lot of trail by error learning, I think.

The Big Show!

Yes here we are, The MindFreaks! The show went rather well and the audience was thrilled by our special "Mind Magic". No major problems occur, however the first night we had to run for the stage because they switched our order. We heard the MC talking about magic and hurried to get in our positions. We literally ran up onto stage just in time, luckily no one was hurt or killed in the process. JS

Final Rehearsal
The past few days I have been rehearsing our magic act for our church's fund raising variety show to send kids to camp this summer. During these rehearsals, other acts (non-magic) are rehearsing in the order of appearance and everyone is getting ready for the first performance tomorrow night. I was told that our act ran a bit long and we needed to pick up the pace. During this rehearsal, there was a lot of confusion over microphone placement. I was told from the beginning I would have a lav microphone to solve my back and forth performance. Also this whole production is not a professional setup, just a group of eager people who want to either sing their favorite song, play their musical instrument or do some magic tricks like me. So, our act has become very Penn and Tellerish in performance. My partner is pretty quite and sometime talks very slow and softly. Tonight I tried getting him charged up by jumping around and practicing before we went on. Things went pretty good, again its hard when you are performing to a group who has already seen your act three times now. My only drawback is the microphone placement. We are introduced and we run out on stage to a big music intro only to fumble around getting our microphones in the right place. If tomorrow night, we enter the stage and microphones are in the wrong places, I will make a bit out of getting the microphones set in the right places. I will overact, loosen the microphone to go down too far and then try to fix it to the correct height, ad libbing all the way if I have too. Not trying to be mean, but if the microphones aren't setup correctly, then if you have to set them up during your act, then at least make it entertaining and funny. Just as long as it doesn't go too long. I also got a little flustered by the " too long comment", so tonight I tried to speed up my patter as well as my performance. Again, I usually work better when I can hear the reactions of an audience and try to keep to the script, but keep that ad lib factor going just in case a baby suddenly screams, or a mic stand falls over, or someone's cel phone goes off. I also tried a little variation tonight where I show a drawing of a spoon, the drawing is slowly bent, and then it is revealed that the spoon drawing has become a bent fork instead. I polled some to the audience to find out if they understood the trick, it was a 50/50 reaction. I only tried it out because the first trick I show is a real spoon, I hand it to my assistant, attempt to bend it in his hands, it doesn't because it has become a fork instead. The first time I performed both tricks, I ended with the drawing of the bent spoon, this got a better reaction. I tried the fork to see if it would get a different reaction or a confused reaction. Its hard to tell, but sometimes you just got to try things that you think might work better. For this performance I will keep it the bent spoon ending. Now I got a little, can I say "pissed"? I found an area to keep my magic stuff at and one of the kids found it. She proudly walks up to me and say, " I know how you do that spoon thing, I looked in your box." What do you say back to that comment? "Well you know there's no Easter Bunny." I was going to continue but I'm really not sure how old she is and didn't want an angry Mom to confront me later, but I would have continued. " Yeah in fact, theres no Tooth Fairy either, and get this Santa, doesn't live at the North Pole, because that's a lie too. In fact, there are lots of lies in this world and you're right, magic is not real either..." Anyway, I stopped at the Easter Bunny line. What's the point of arguing with someone that obviously doesn't respect your property. She fluttered off to rehearse her song on the piano, "The Rainbow Connection" ironically... Rainbow's are visions They're only illusions And rainbows have nothing to hide So we've been told and some chose to Believe it But I know they're wrong wait and see Someday we'll find it The Rainbow Connection The lovers, the dreamers and me Maybe the piano will go out of tune... JS

Rehearsal time
Our show begins on Friday, May 30th and Saturday, May 31st. So far we have rehearse a few times together and know the order of the tricks that we will perform. As an added element to the show I have a few music tracks which I would like to use at the beginning of our act. In the first effect I will be attempting to bend a spoon, but then it is revealed that it has turned into a fork instead. For the beginning intro and start of the trick, "Peter Gunn" by the Blues Brothers will be playing and fade down toward the end of the trick. The next time we enter the stage, "Peter Gunn" by the Art of Noise will be playing. This time I have a drawing of a spoon which I attempt to bend, I hand it to my partner who holds it and he slowly bends the paper. Its obvious that he is banding the paper and not the spoon, until I show the audience that the spoon really is bent afterall. Since its another attempt to bend a spoon, I thought having a similiar music track would make more sense. I only hope that our sound guy will fade down the music when I am explaining something to the audience.

Magicians.com Member Spotlight is on George Buckley.

George joined Magicians.com on March 12, 2008 and in just a short amount of time has already generously shared his knowledge of magic with other members on the site. After learning more about George over the past several weeks, it's no surprise that his love for magic is also shared with his passion to help others also learn this wonderful art form.

George is the Secretary for IBM Ring 320 "The Blue Ridge Magicians" in Staunton, VA, and has created a private group for its members at Magicians.com! George is utilizing the group to collaborate with the members of Ring 320. George now has the opportunity as well to use the new "Events" feature to schedule Ring meetings, request RSVP's, and announce other magical events!

Magicians.com offers a complete suite of tools that allows its members to share pictures, videos, comments, and more to thousands and thousands of visitors every month! George has already posted an introduction, shared a few of his favorite pictures, a video of a 3-card monte effect he custom made, and is currently participating in a number of discussions in the forums. As well, George has shared with the members of Magicians.com a pdf titled "Blue Ridge Coin Effects" containing basic coin moves and effects put out by IBM Ring 320.

VA Hospital Bedford Ma 4-10-2008
I'm a member of S.A.M. (Society of American Magicians) Assembly 118. We ask around to organizations to see if they want us to do magic for their residence, guests and friends. On this day, we were at at VA Hospital in Bedford Mass. This is all volunteer work. On this Thursday evening we had about 50 residence and a few of the staff watch us perform. My Version of the Robert-Houdins Mechanical Acrobat Antonio Diavolo
I recently completed construction of Robert-Houdins acrobat. I had been such a fan of magic since I was a little kid. I always wanted to be a professional magician, but I knew I would never have the nerve to perform in front of people( kind of hard to be a pro and not perform in front of people) so magic took a back seat. I restore automata for a living and recently came upon a video of Robert- Houdins life and came to realize how closely magic and automata were linked. I decided I wanted to build a few of Houdins effects. The first being his Orange Tree. Then I decided I would undertake his acrobat. I finially finished him and he is posted on Youtube under the name of Dante The Daring. He is a full size fully functioning version of the original.
